Commuting in the afternoon heat

I started a class (Philosophy: Intro to Modern Logic) this past week that requires me to be downtown from 3-5PM on Mondays and Wednesdays until the middle of September. I've had four class sessions so far and I've ridden the Salsa Casseroll to all but one class. Riding the bike is great, as it's approximately 10 miles from my place of employment (91st and Hwy 2) and I get awesome parking right outside the building where my class is located at no cost.

The issue I'm trying to deal with is what to do when you arrive for class all sweaty from a 10 mile ride in the middle of the afternoon? I've tried a few things and so far I've found that bringing another shirt to change into once I get there and a wash cloth to wipe myself down with are things that work well. I've been using a Chrome Messenger Bag that I like a lot, but it definitely makes my back sweaty. Next week I'm going to try riding the Volpe with panniers and also bringing a spare pair of undershorts for my cycling shorts, so I can change into them when I get there and have a non-sweaty chamois while sitting in class and on the ride home.

I'm thankful I don't have to deal with this issue when I commute to work normally, as showering there after a 15 minute cool down period works out great.

A pannier is definitely the way to go to keep cooler in summer.

In reading your other posts, sounds like you've had some achilles tendonitis? Me as well -- did you do anything that helped it along?

I have and it's much better now, almost to the point that I don't notice my left achilles tendon tightening up anymore.

The two main things I did was cut back on my saddle time and after reading everything I could on this issue w/ cycling, move the cleat back as far as possible on my MTB shoes (Specialized MTB Comp). As soon as I moved the cleat I noticed an immediate difference.

Good luck with your tendonitis.

Try out witch hazel on that washcloth. I know, I was beyond hesitant to do it too, thought the next step was actually liking Phish and smelling like patchouli oil. Really though, some witch hazel and a can of Axe is awesome for getting clean and smellin' good fast. And lord knows, I can stink with the worst of 'em.

Thanks for the info. Mine flared up during last day of TdN (tour de Nebraska) I was grinding pretty hard up hills.

Since then it's subsided with less saddle time and less stressful rides. Just wary of pushing it too hard too soon.

My cleat position has always been in the middle so I haven't messed with the position. But that'll be the next step, if necessary.

Happy riding -- be safe. I enjoy your blog.
